KUWAIT CITY [ ABN NEWS ] — The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has signed an agreement with Thailand’s civil aviation authorities on the liberalisation of air transport between the State of Kuwait and the Kingdom of Thailand.
Under the new accord, which was reached during high level talks in the Thai capital, Bangkok, all operational constraints are revoked. This means the national carriers of both countries are free to operate any number of flights, with no restrictions on aircraft type or seating capacities.
The new agreement permits Kuwaiti airlines to fly to all Thailand’s international airports and is based on the principle of having multiple carriers licensed to operate between the two countries.
The Kuwait delegation was led by Mr. Fawaz Abdul Aziz Al-Farah, President of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, who signed the new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the principle of “Open Skies” along with his Thai counterpart.
The talks were arranged to update the bilateral framework which regulates air transport arrangements between Kuwait and Thailand, in line with the Kuwait government’s wider goal of establishing a comprehensive “Open Skies” policy with nations around the world.
The objective is to foster closer bilateral relations with friendly countries and endow Kuwait International Airport with the largest possible network of destinations, increasing the variety of travel options available in the Kuwaiti air transport market.
The new agreement is expected to generate significant opportunities for both sides, increasing passenger and air freight traffic and boosting trade exchange between Kuwait and Thailand.
The Kuwait delegation also included Mr. Salah Al-Majed, Director of the Department of Air Transport; Mr. Abdullah Al-Rajhi, DGCA Air Transport Researcher; Mr. Ayadah M. Al-Saidi, Counselor at the Kuwait Embassy in Thailand; Mr. Wajdi O. Al-Misbah, Specialist – Governmental & Commercial Agreements, Planning Department & International Affairs, Kuwait Airways; and Mr. Sabah S. Shammas, Senior Regional Director Far East, Kuwait Airways Bangkok.
