ANN ARBOR [ ABN NEWS ] — Located in downtown Ann Arbor is the historic Michigan Theater. Opened in 1928, the theater contains a fully functioning stage, a sizeable orchestra pit, an elaborate Barton theater organ, grand lobbies and over 1,700 seats. In 2006, the League of Historic American Theatres named the Michigan Theater its “Outstanding Historic Theater” and the Sundance Institute chose it as one of 12 founding members of its Art House Project. The Michigan Theater plays host to numerous annual film events each year in addition to showing nationally acclaimed and independent films daily.

One such event is the Ann Arbor Film Festival (AAFF). The AAFF is the longest-running independent and experiential film festival in North America. Lasting six days, the festival receives more than 2,500 submissions from over 65 countries and winning filmmakers are awarded more than $20,000 in cash and film stock/services. The AAFF takes place annually at the end of March.

Another annual event is the Cinetopia International Film Festival which features films from the world’s premier festivals such as Sundance, Cannes, Venice, Toronto, Berlin, SXSW and Tribeca. This festival takes place in June and also includes screenings at the Detroit Film Theatre located at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Located just blocks of the University of Michigan campus, the Michigan Theater offers university and student speaker events and films. The theater also functions as a beautiful and unique venue for local community events and concerts.
